Program Description Provided by the Institution:

Combined School-Clinical Child Psychology Program

The evolving psychoanalytic terrain from Freud through ego psychology and relational perspectives is covered historically, meta-psychologically and clinically in a two-semester course entitled “The Developmental and Psychodynamic Foundations of Psychotherapy.” Seeking the truth behind the obvious; tuning clinical reasoning in a psychodynamic key, listening with the “third ear”; awakening the urge to complete development; the interpretive method-the interpretive moment; the past evoked in the present; the mutative vectors are some of the engaging and arresting topics and aims of the course.

Introduction to Child Psychotherapy is taught by a psychoanalyst and emphasized dynamic play therapy with the therapist-patient-family relationship emphasized…One year practicum in child psychotherapy offers individual supervision by adjunct psychodynamic supervisors (other orientations possible for those students not interested….); two child or adolescent patients assigned to each student for one year, with second year of treatment optional if student interested. Group supervision required at university with psychodynamic faculty.  Also available is elective advanced seminar on Projective Personality Assessment (Rorschach and TAT) given by psychoanalysts on faculty. We welcome students who want to work with children, families, schools from a psychodynamic perspective.
